Between the 2023–24 and 2026 Wars: Journalists’ Challenges Persist Despite Accumulated Experience

Fifteen months after the 2023–24 war, journalists in Lebanon face renewed threats as the Israeli war escalated again in March 2026. Physical safety remains a top concern amid shelling, gunfire, and attacks that do not spare civilians. Access to reliable information is also severely constrained by disinformation, restricted movement, and damaged infrastructure.

As media coverage resumes and more than two weeks have passed since the outbreak of the war, questions arise about the extent to which journalists have benefited from their previous wartime experience. Have they developed more effective methods to enhance their safety, access information, and secure sources, or do the challenges still exceed their capacity to overcome them?

According to this report, despite accumulated experience and some specialized training, key challenges persist. Foremost among these is physical protection, with many journalists noting that the current war is more intense and poses greater security risks than the previous one.

To navigate these conditions, journalists rely on protective equipment, teamwork, and careful planning. Organizations such as the Samir Kassir Foundation and the RSF Center for Media Freedom provide personal protective equipment, safety training, first aid training, and guidance to support journalists on the frontlines.

Overall, the situation highlights the urgent need to strengthen protections, ensure access to information, and enable journalists to report the truth while safeguarding their lives.
