A Year of Impact: Protecting Media and Information Integrity
This annual report highlights Maharat Foundation’s work throughout 2025 to strengthen independent journalism, promote evidence-based reporting, and advance a rights-based information environment in Lebanon and the region.
The year posed significant challenges. In Lebanon, journalists faced increasing political pressure, institutional weaknesses, and a volatile security environment, becoming direct targets in recent years.
Beyond Lebanon, journalists across the MENA region also face similar challenging conditions. Key threats include direct targeting in conflict zones, limited access to safety equipment and institutional support, psychological trauma, online censorship, restrictive legal frameworks, and the broader effects of democratic backsliding on international norms.
In response, Maharat implemented more than 15 projects addressing key areas such as journalists’ safety and digital security, media law reform, good governance and fiscal transparency, information integrity and elections, media and gender equality, and media viability. Despite the diversity of these initiatives, they were united by a single vision: strengthening a democratic, accountable, and rights-based media ecosystem in Lebanon and the region.
